Small kitches are defined by the National Kitchen and Bath Association as spaces that are smaller than 150sq feet. Trying to design these spaces to fit all the necessary items of a kitchen is a design challenge. Some of these tips may come handy when working with small kitchen spaces to make them seem large. First and foremost is the color, choose from light colors which make the room look bright and airy. Then the tiles on the floor. Set them in a diagonal pattern to give them room a bigger look. Use bright lighting to off set the light color of the room. Kitchen cabinets and storage areas are very important.
Glass doors for the cabinets make them look spacious. Adding huge antique brass or other metal knobs will not go with the small space. To avoid that there are a lot of alternatives like handblown glass knobs, ceramic handles or pulls, acrylic knobs or even frosted glass hardware for your cabinet doors. some of these knobs and pulls come in a variety of designs to suit different styles.
Look for gemstone hardware, or jeweled knobs from companies like Amerock or Carol Beachs collections. Some of the companies also manufacture antique reproductions of glass hardware. Appliances are an integral part of the kitchen but most come in large sizes. In a few places you can find space saver refrigerators, ovens and stoves, that do not compromise the little kitchen space that is available. Finally one good idea would be to have a kitchen island which can serve as a table and a storage space.
